Have you heard of Halfpops? This snack, very new to the Phoenix area (and available at AJ’s) is gluten free, nut free, contains no hydrogenated oils or corn syrup. When I received the package of Halfpops, I was definitely intrigued – they are, as the name indicates, partially air-popped popcorn.
Not only do they sound intriguing – how do you halfpop poporn? – but they look intriguing. They come in two flavors (at the moment – Natural Butter & Pure Ocean Sea Salt and Natural Aged White Cheddar. We decided to try them out for a snack during movie night, and we all enjoyed them.
The texture is very similar to another snack – one with ‘corn’ and ‘nuts’ in the name – but without the long list of difficult to pronounce ingredients. They are very crunchy and do taste like hearty version of popcorn. Halfpops Natural Butter & Pure Ocean Sea Salt are a delicious alternative to other salty snacks, and I’m sort of in love with the Natural Aged White Cheddar. (Full disclosure – my son and husband are not fans of the cheddar variety – but that’s okay – more for me!)
You can, of course, order Halfpops online, where they’re available by the case. (16 2oz bags cost $23.84, which breaks down to $1.49/bag) It is honestly very difficult to eat a whole bag – 2oz might seem like a typical ‘chip/snack’ serving size but these are hearty, filling snacks – I can send 1/3 a bag to school with Jeremiah and it’s a great mid-day snack for him.
I also loved using them in alternative ways – they’re great instead of croutons on salad, and if you like your oatmeal more savory than sweet, you can add the Natural Butter & Sea Salt to your cooked steel cut oats to give it some hearty crunch. Again – these small bags go a long way, so you only need a few! They would make a great addition to a party, too – I can see this on a tray with meats and cheeses, as well as a bowl. Of course, if you have little ones without molars, I would keep them away from these. They definitely require chewing!
