Jeremiah last August, his first day of Preschool
Most kids are either already back in school or will be heading back next week – and it can be exciting, overwhelming, and nerve-wracking all at the same time. And that’s just for the parents! Who knows what the kids are thinking, right?? I know I’m nervous for Jeremiah as he heads to kindergarten next week in a school where he knows…no one. He doesn’t seem to mind, though, and he’s always been an outgoing, funny kid who seems to attract friends. I am also worried about academics – granted, in kindergarten, there’s hopefully not much to be concerned with, but as your children age, what if they need a tutor for specific subjects? That’s why I was really excited and surprised to learn that there are actual in-home tutors in Phoenix via a company called Varsity Tutors.
School can be extremely difficult, and I know I struggled in high school – English was always an easy subject for me, however, I struggled in classes like Algebra and Physics. What I wouldn’t have given for a physics tutor! My worst subject, though, by far, was GYM. How sad is that? It’s probably the easiest class to pass, yet, when I was a sophomore, I FAILED GYM CLASS! How mortifying to look back and remember that – and, of course, to share it all with you.
Even with my high school struggles, I managed to graduate just fine and go on to college. And do you know what? In college, with the help of math tutoring in the study center, I not only passed algebra with flying colors – I went on to become an algebra tutor myself! It was quite the turn of events, and from my personal experience, tutoring can really help make a difference. I went from hating math to loving it – in the span of a few years! And Varsity Tutors can help your student, too.
What subjects did you struggle with in school?
Did you ever use a tutor? How was your experience?

I’ve had the same experience with math! Great tutors make a big difference and can change a student’s academics in a big way! I’m so glad I have a great math tutor. (I’m still taking classes

You failed gym!??!? How can you possibly do that, other than cutting class too often? Just for showing up and trying (even if you strike out every time), there’s no way they can (or should) fail you. Oy…
And your son starts school next week? Wow. My kids don’t start back for another whole month!

I totally failed gym – I was a bit of a rebel and didn’t want to change into my gym clothes. So I’d sit on the side of the gym and do nothing. Talk about lazy!

What a small world… I have an Aunt who lives in Phoenix that has been a high school math teacher and home tutor! Just thought that was an interesting coincidence. I also had a similar story too.. did poorly at math in High-School and ended up doing some intensive math in College. A math tutor would have been very helpful when I was younger, i think.

History, hated it!! I slept every single class. I actually dropped out of physics my senior year. I was not about to do any of that! My youngest heads to kindergarten Sept 4, and she’s excited, me very sad:( As far as tutoring, I tutored math in middle school. I never had below an 98% in math so enjoyed helping the younger children out (we were in a K-12 school.)

I only had a tutor when I broke my leg and had to be taught at home in 6th grade. It didn’t work out well for me because we were learning complex English sentence diagramming material that my tutor didn’t understand!
In college, however, I totally could have used a math tutor. It’s all good, though. I got through it and graduated without one

I love math, but basic math! Geometry was my worst subject!
